Lutein (LOO-teen) and zeaxanthin are important nutrients found in green leafy vegetables  and various yellow to orange-colored fruits and flowers. Lutein is also found in significant quantities in the yolk of the egg, and in corn. One of the richest sources of lutein and zeaxanthin in nature ismarigold flowers.

Many studies have shown that lutein and zeaxanthin reduce the risk of chronic eye diseases, including age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts.

 The highest concentration is found in the macular area of the retina. They are also present in the lens.
